Abstract

The advent of smart home healthcare technology has greatly benefitted the elderly and chronic patients through constant monitoring. Even though a number of patient monitoring systems are already available for use, they follow a more passive approach. In those systems, interventions happen only if certain preset conditions or optimization strategies are fulfilled. However, they cannot completely erase the demand of unnecessary triggering of sensors and ultimately false alarms. To overcome this problem, in this paper we put forward a novel approach called optimization-based context-aware patient monitoring (OCPM), a system that integrates contextual awareness with the adaptive Honey Bee optimization (AHBO) for intelligent healthcare support. The idea is to collect different kinds of patient health information including physiological status, the patient's activity, environmental circumstances, and previous health parameters and compute a context score that is used to reflect the present state of health. This score is then used to control the behavior of the adaptive Honey Bee optimization algorithm determining the ability to schedule tasks and make multiple objectives. Specifically, the optimization minimizes the risk of changes in patients' health, monitoring response time, energy consumption rate, and every possible false alarm at the same time. The experiments with real smart healthcare datasets show that the application of the approach guarantees the best effect as compared to conventional methods of optimization such as Genetic algorithm (GA), Particle swarm optimization (PSO), Ant colony optimization (ACO), and classical honey bee optimization (HBO). Specifically, the proposed method allows considering all possible reasons of changes in patients' health and comes up with the solution that appears to provide practically nobody of false alarms.
